This self-directed after school activity has students write computer programs using the Scratch graphical programming web site.  Students would be required to attend one short meeting a week at which the current project will be introduced.  Students, using their Scratch accounts, will work on the assignment on their own any time in the library and at home.  If students successfully complete the program, they will be awarded a quarter credit in June for a new Salesian High School course, Computer Coding.  A letter grade will be assigned to each student that completes the program.  This grade would be included in their GPA.

How this activity/class will work:  After creating a Scratch account, students will be assigned a program, typically, a computer game, to complete.  Students create the game by following directions on YouTube.  The completed computer game is then emailed to the moderator and graded.  If the student followed the YouTube directions, the student would earn a B.  If the student expanded upon or extended the YouTube directions, the student would earn an A.  The number of assignments will be decided by the moderator, typically one a week.
